Ophüls putting his ear to the unheard whispers of silent cinema, an era lost in the shadow of the talkie. It's a phantasmagorical voyage that runs counter to the downtrodden poetic realism of the time, revived through trick shots of invisible sentience and the guiding passages of the dead.
