They are gone, we killed them, or at the very least they ignore us now because it didn’t go well last time. They mentioned how the world came together for a common enemy. I would have loved to see what happens when the common enemy is gone and the armies now have giant fighting robots.

For starters, it is established in the movie canon that there were no Kaiju attacks between Pacific Rim and its sequel, so this immediately rules out the chance of it fitting in there somehow.
