In 1591 she signed Willoughby’s mason, John Roses, to complete the stonework on her own grand design at Hardwick which was designed, as was Wollaton, by Robert Smythson.

She told him his asking price was too mach and declined the offer. Instead, she leant him the money on the understanding that the land would be security for the debt.
