Throughout his career in the Dramatics, Lenny Mayes sang lead, second tenor and baritone. His performances on stage and on records are a testament to his incredible talent and professionalism.
They were replaced by Larry James "L.J." Reynolds and Leonard "Lenny" Mayes (who died of lung cancer on November 8, 2004, at the age of 53). At the urging of Don Davis and Stax Records, the original group changed its billing to "Ron Banks and the Dramatics".

Lenny Mayes was born in Detroit, Michigan on April 5, 1951 to Beverly Mayes (Branhan) and Leonard Robert Mayes. He was the first child born to this union. Lenny was raised by his stepfather, Samuel Calvin Branhan, who preceded him in death.
