Frederick J. Maher is an American drummer, music programmer and record producer. He was a member of the bands Massacre (1980–81), the Dance, Material, Scritti Politti, and has recorded and toured with Lou Reed. In 1984 he released Basic, an instrumental collaboration album with ex-Voidoids guitarist Robert Quine.

Fred Maher is a staff producer at Elektra Records and drummer. Fred was a member of Material until the release of Memory Serves, after which he quit. From 1984-1988 Fred was the drummer of Scritti Politti.

He started playing the drums as a kid, and was still only 14 when he met Bill Laswell and joined the newly forming Zu Band. Fred tells us how that happened, and how Zu Band would become Material.
