Pembroke College in Brown University was the coordinate women's college for Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. It was founded in 1891 and merged into Brown in 1971.
10 de abr. de 2023 · On July 1, 1971, Brown University fully merged with its sister institution, Pembroke College. This move followed a nationwide trend towards co-education that saw the consolidation of women’s colleges with their all-male counterparts and the admission of men into previously all-women’s colleges.
In 1928, the Women’s College was renamed Pembroke College in Brown University. The chosen name made sense, given that the College was informally called Pembroke in reference to the name of its main building (Pembroke Hall).
After Alumnae Hall was built in 1927, Pembroke Hall was converted to purely academic uses with the top floor serving as a library. Today, the building houses the Pembroke Center for Teaching and Research on Women and the Cogut Center for the Humanities.
The Pembroke Center was founded in 1981, a decade after Pembroke College, the coordinate women's college in Brown University, merged with The [men's] College.
Initiated by the Pembroke Center Advisory Council in 1982, the Pembroke Center Oral History Project records the experiences of cis and trans women and non-binary members of Brown University and Pembroke College – the women’s college in Brown University until 1971.
