Fred Stein (July 3, 1909 – September 27, 1967) was a street photographer in Paris and New York after he was forced to flee his native Germany by the Nazi threat in the early 1930s. He explored the new creative possibilities of photography, capturing spontaneous scenes from life on the street.
Fred Stein was a master of the art of street photography. His pioneering work with the hand-held camera captured some of the earliest images of people in the midst of everyday life, revealing striking psychological and cultural insights.
El fotógrafo Fred Stein nació en Dresden, Alemania en 1909. Desde su juventud estuvo interesado por la política y llegó a ser un activista en contra del nazismo imperante. Estudió derecho en la Universidad de Leipzig, pero su condición de judío le impedía ejercer su profesión en Alemania.
Fred Stein was born on July 3, 1909 in Dresden, Germany. As a teenager he was deeply interested in politics and became an early anti-Nazi activist. He was a brilliant student, and went to Leipzig University, full of humanist ideals, to study law.
