Painter and sculptor Philpot trained at Lambeth Art School and in the Paris studio of Jean-Paul Laurens at the Académie Julian. He quickly established himself as a successful society portraitist in the years before the First World War.
Primarily known as a portrait painter, Glyn Warren Philpot (1884–1937) received great recognition during his lifetime. In 1913 he won first prize at the Carnegie International competition in Pittsburgh, he was elected a Royal Academician in 1923, and in 1930 he had a one-man exhibition at the Venice Biennale.
Philpot’s appointment as President of the Guild of Catholic Artists and Craftsmen in 1929 led to an output of traditionally painted spiritual and evangelistic works for churches and Guild exhibitions, alongside his greatly popular portraiture in the style of artists such as John Singer Sargent and Diego Velázquez.
