Mathias, an Alsatian innkeeper who is being pressed for money, robs and murders one of his guests, a wealthy Polish Jew named Koveski. As the years go by, Mathias attains success but is secretly tormented by the sound of the sleigh bells that accompanied Koveski's approach to the inn.
