The island of Lindisfarne is located along the northeast coast of England, close to the border with Scotland. It measures 3.0 miles (4.8 km) from east to west and 1.5 miles (2.4 km) from north to south, and comprises approximately 1,000 acres (400 hectares) at high tide.
As well as the wealth of history within its tidal walls, the Holy Island of Lindisfarne has an exciting array of wildlife to spot. Its island status protects tidal mudflats, salt marshes and dunes which together form the Lindisfarne National Nature Reserve.

Lindisfarne – also known as Holy Island – is one of the most important centres of early English Christianity. Irish monks settled here in AD 635 and the monastery became the centre of a major saint’s cult celebrating its bishop, Cuthbert.
