Henry Stanbery (February 20, 1803 – June 26, 1881) was an American lawyer from Ohio. He was most notable for his service as Ohio's first attorney general from 1846 to 1851 and the United States Attorney General from 1866 to 1868.
From 1846 to 1851, Stanbery served as the first attorney general of Ohio, returning to private practice in 1853, this time in Cincinnati. For the next thirteen years, he practiced law, suspending his work only when President Andrew Johnson offered him the post of attorney general in 1866.

President Andrew Johnson unsuccessfully nominated him to the Supreme Court, but was able to garner Senate confirmation of Stanbery as Attorney General. Stanbery was a conservative Republican and came to the office with little influence in national political affairs.
An Ohio lawyer and United States attorney general (1866–1868), Henry Stanbery opposed congressional reconstruction and prepared many of President andrew johnson's veto messages.
When the House of Representatives voted to impeach President Johnson on February 24, 1868, Stanbery resigned as U.S. Attorney General on March 12, 1868, so he could serve as the lead of the five-man team of attorneys named to defend Johnson.
