Evalyn McLean (née Walsh; August 1, 1886 – April 26, 1947) was an American mining heiress and socialite, famous for reputedly being an owner of the 45-carat (9.0 g) Hope Diamond (which was bought in 1911 for US$180,000 from Pierre Cartier), as well as another famous diamond, the 94-carat (18.8 g) Star of the East.

1912: Pierre Cartier sold the Hope Diamond to Ned and Evalyn Walsh McLean for $180,000. Before he made the sale, he commissioned a contemporary setting to make it more appealing to the McLeans. 1947: Evalyn Walsh McLean passed away at the age of 60.
In 1910 the Hope Diamond was shown to Mrs. Evalyn Walsh McLean, of Washington D.C., at Cartier's in Paris, but she did not like the setting. Cartier had the diamond reset and took it to the U.S. where he left it with Mrs. McLean for a weekend. This strategy was successful.
