Gotthard Kettler, último maestre de la Orden de Livonia, fue el primer duque de Curlandia. Otros miembros de la Orden se convirtieron en nobles del territorio, y los feudos que anteriormente poseían pasaron a ser sus tierras. En total, Kettler recibió casi un tercio de la extensión del nuevo ducado.

Gotthard Kettler (who himself signed his name in Low German as Godderd) came from a noble Westphalian family. in his youth he joined the Livonian branch of the Teutonic Order, and in 1554 was elected commander of Dünaburg/Daugavpils.
Gotthard Kettler (also Ketteler; 2 February 1517 – 17 May 1587) was the last Master of the Livonian Order and the first Duke of Courland and Semigallia. Ferdinand Kettler (1 November 1655 – 4 May 1737) was the last Duke of Courland and Semigallia from the Kettler family.
