Pugin’s favoured rural church model, suitable for the relatively small scale required by Episcopalian congregations, was completely inappropriate for the teaming downtown masses of the immigrant Catholics on the East Coast and in seaport towns.

His position was well illustrated in the plates of Contrasts.
