WVAS-FM is a non-commercial listener supported public radio station operating 24 hours a day. Our primary format is jazz but we also play blues & gospel. WVAS-FM also carries national and local newscasts and various public affairs talk shows.
Alabama has produced some of the most notable jazz musicians in the country such as Nat King Cole from Montgomery, and Tuscaloosa’s Dinah Washington just to name a few. The first piano blues solo ever recorded was played by Birmingham-born Clarence “Pinetop” Smith.
