Each organism in a food chain occupies a specific trophic level (energy level), its position in the food chain. The first trophic level in the food chain is the producers. The primary consumers (the herbivores that eat producers) are the second trophic level. Next are higher-level consumers.

Each step of the pyramid represents a different trophic level, starting with primary producers at the bottom. The width of each step represents the rate of energy flow through each trophic level.
A food web is a network of feeding interactions through which both energy and matter move. In food webs, arrows point from an organism that is eaten to the organism that eats it. As the Arctic food web below shows, some species can eat organisms from more than one trophic level.
