Tao Xu is a main character in the first season of Netflix series Heartstopper. He is portrayed by William Gao. Tao is the “token straight friend” and part of Charlie’s support system at school. He is protective of Charlie and very skeptical of Nick (but soon grows to accept the rugby star).

Tao Xu is Charlie's best friend in Heartstopper and Nick and Charlie. He is also Elle’s boyfriend. Tao is Charlie's closest friend, who he seems to be quite close to since he immediately picked up on Charlie's crush on Nick. He is far more extroverted than Charlie.
He is known for his debut role as Tao Xu in the Netflix series Heartstopper (2022–present), for which he was nominated for a Children's and Family Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Performance. Gao and his younger sister Olivia Hardy formed a music duo called Wasia Project in 2019.
