After working for 30 years at a bank, Henri Verdoux is laid off. The world is in the middle of a depression and work is hard to find. Monsieur Verdoux acknowledges business as a a typical function, but nonetheless a ruthless one. What a brave film to make, especially post-WWII. Chaplin's performance is quite a feat, as he reserves sympathy not for Henri's actions but for the desperation of the societal constructs around him.
