I couldn’t verify its origins, but I wonder if it was the one that surfaced in the 1950s when her nephew read an article about the opening of a new museum in Dodge City, Kansas, and remembered his Aunt Celie’s trunk.

Born Celia Ann Blaylock in Wisconsin in 1850, and raised on a farm in Iowa, accounts of the day describe Mattie as having “large bones and a fine face.”

Mattie’s body lies in the historic Pinal City Cemetery near the town of Superior, Arizona, a few miles east of Apache Junction (see map below). Her grave is the first one on the right at the 8×8 upright post.
