21 de may. de 2015 · Those of us who follow the life and legacy of George Gordon Meade know what being erased from history looks like. In 1913, 50 years after the Battle of Gettysburg, Meade’s grandson published the generals Life and Letters. A reviewer was moved to note, “For fifty years Meade has been set aside, ignored, depreciated, even insulted.”.
The George Gordon Meade Collection 1793-1896. The Historical Society of Pennsylvania research library contains the papers of General Meade and his son George. The library also contains letters of Major James C. Biddle, one of the general’s staff officers.

A Philadelphia merchant living in Spain, Meade had been crippled financially during the Napoleonic Wars and was serving a naval agent for the US government in Cádiz.
George Gordon Meade was an 1835 West Point graduate and U.S. Army officer and who resigned his commission after only a year to pursue what he hoped would be a more lucrative private career. This failed to materialize and he re-enlisted in the U.S. Corps of Topographical Engineers in 1842.

George Gordon Meade (1815-1872) was one of the few Union Army generals in the American Civil War who was born and began his career in a foreign country. He was born in Cadiz, Spain on December 31, 1815. He came to the United States after his family was financially ruined during the Napoleonic Wars. Meade was made commander of the Union Army of the Potomac just before the Battle of Gettysburg.
