Suzanna Hamilton was born in London and was a protégée of filmmaker Claude Whatham, who discovered her in a children's experimental theatre in North London in the early 1970s. The first feature in which she appeared was Swallows and Amazons (1974), which was directed by Whatham and based on the popular children's book of the same name by Arthur Ransome .
