City Slickers is honestly one of the more poetic and philosophical flicks ever made about middle age apathy - it’s just that they filled it with so many witty cowboy jokes no one noticed haha. Super underrated film and a great screenplay, reminds me of Groundhog Day and Truman Show in how it mixes big laughs with touching melancholy.
In CITY SLICKERS, Mitch (Billy Crystal) wakes up on his 39th birthday, bored with his job, listless with his family, and obsessed with the pointlessness of his life. As a birthday treat, his friends Phil ( Daniel Stern ) and Ed ( Bruno Kirby ) surprise him with a childhood fantasy come true: the chance to be cowboys for a week and drive cattle from New Mexico to Colorado.
"City Slickers" focuses on Crystal's Mitch Robbins and his two pals as the trio heads to New Mexico to get out of New York City and find themselves as the three barrel toward middle age. Driving cattle allows the three men to hash out their domestic issues, deal with bullying cowboys, and figure out what is most important in their lives.
