Gaumata was a Magian, a member of a priestly caste in ancient Persia known for their religious and ritualistic duties. He assumed the identity of Smerdis, the younger brother of Cambyses II, the previous king of Persia. Following the death of Cambyses II in 522 BCE, Gaumata seized the opportunity to impersonate Smerdis and claim the throne.
