Thomas Hardy est un poète et romancier anglais. Né dans une famille anglicane modérée et modeste, à Higher Bockhampton, dans le Dorset, son père est tailleur de pierre et sa mère, lettrée, lui donne cours à domicile. Il arrête ses études à 16 ans en devenant apprenti chez un architecte local.
