In 1606 King James I arranged Essex’ marriage to Frances Howard, countess of Suffolk. But the countess soon fell in love with the king’s Scottish favourite, Robert Carr, and in 1613 James had a divorce commission annul her marriage so that she could marry Carr, who was also created earl of Somerset.
