  6. Woody Herman (1913–87) Woodrow (‘Woody’) Charles Herman was a clarinettist, saxophonist, singer and big band leader of groups called The Herd, known for the up-and-coming musicians he employed. Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, as a child Herman worked as a vaudeville singer and tap dancer, and by the age of 12 had learned to play saxophone and clarinet.
