Maya Angelou nació el 4 de abril de 1928 en Saint Louis, Missouri, aunque gran parte de su niñez transcurrió junto a su abuela en una zona rural de Arkansas. Con dieciséis años obtuvo su graduado en la escuela superior. Ese mismo año nació su hijo Guy, y comenzó a trabajar como cocinera y camarera.
