Together with a friend, he built a bamboo and canvas glider. He attempted to fly it off a hilltop, but merely succeeded in wrecking the contraption.

In his youth, Udet attended the Theresien-Gymnasium in Munich. He hung out at a nearby airplane factory and army airship detachment. At the age of thirteen, Udet helped found the Munich Aero-Club.
