One of the largest private residences ever built in New York City, the Cornelius Vanderbilt II mansion was completed in 1883 and expanded into an even grander home a decade later. Designed by architect George B. Post (1837–1913), the château-like edifice stretched along Fifth Avenue from 57th to 58th Street (the current site of Bergdorf Goodman).
