Cat fleas jump an average horizontal distance of 8 inches (20 cm), and an average height of 5.2 inches (13.2 cm). At a maximum, the best performers can jump as far as 19 inches (48 cm), and as a high as 7.9 inches (20 cm).
Fleas live by ingesting the blood of their hosts. Adult fleas grow to about 3 millimetres ( 1⁄8 inch) long, are usually brown, and have bodies that are "flattened" sideways or narrow, enabling them to move through their hosts' fur or feathers. They lack wings; their hind legs are extremely well adapted for jumping.

Jump trajectories also had large horizontal components and were never in the vertical direction.
