The initiative for the academy came from the Steins and the Dômiers , with the involvement of Hans Purrmann , Patrick Henry Bruce , and Sarah Stein .

Later in the 1890s he would study at the Académie Carrière, headed up by famous portraitist Eugene Carrière.
