Hace 4 días · From 1700 to 1802. During the eighteenth century there were four Dukes of Bedford. In 1694 the fifth Earl had been raised to the dukedom as a mark of honour for his eldest son, William, Lord Russell, who had been beheaded in 1683 for his supposed complicity in the Rye House Plot.

Bedford County was named in honor of John Russell, the fourth Duke of Bedford, who was Secretary of State of Great Britain from February 13th, 1748, to June 26th, 1757.
