Founded in 1976 under the name Lucifer by guitarist/vocals Kevin Heybourne, and was initially comprised of himself, guitarist Rob Downing, drummer Steve Jones, and bassist Barry Clements. Steve Coleman replaced Jones and a bassist replaced Clements in 1978 when the name changed to Angel Witch.

La banda la formaron el guitarrista y vocalista Kevin Heybourne, el guitarrista Rob Downing, Dave Hogg en la batería y Kevin Riddles en el bajo. Junto con bandas como Blitzkrieg (banda), Jaguar, Diamond Head o Praying Mantis, fueron uno de los representantes más importantes de la NWOBHM y gozaron de cierto éxito comercial en su época.
