La banda fue compuesta originalmente por tres hermanos: Pete Loeffler (voz y guitarra), Sam Loeffler (batería y percusión) y Joe Loeffler (bajo y coros) [1] Cuando Joe dejó la banda en 2005, Geno Lenardo le sustituyó hasta que fue reemplazado por el cuñado de Pete y Sam, Dean Bernardini.
El nombre de Chevelle vino de la pasión de los miembros de la banda por los autos rápidos, también es el auto favorito de su padre. La banda comenzó a tocar en pequeños clubes y conciertos en Chicago cuando Joe Loeffler tenía apenas 14 años.
