Our mission is to encourage students to engage in scholarship and to pursue all forms of cinema production.

  2. The School of Cinema provides its undergraduate majors with a broad liberal arts education focused on three core values: creative expression, critical thinking, and social engagement. Students interested in the major are welcome to visit the School and meet with faculty and students.

  5. Identify contemporary technological, artistic, and industrial trends in the cinematic arts. Acquire the basic technical skills necessary for cinematic expression (animation, filmmaking, and screenwriting). Locate personal voice in the creation of the cinematic arts.

  6. The School of Cinema is an academic unit in the College of Liberal & Creative Arts at San Francisco State University, a public research university in San Francisco. It has Bachelor of Arts, a Master of Arts, and Master of Fine Arts in cinema programs.

  7. The M.F.A. in Cinema is intended for individuals who wish to pursue independent film and media production. A 60-unit terminal degree, the program offers students the opportunity to focus on any/all of the following areas: documentary, experimental and/or fiction. Applicants must have a GPA of 3.0 in the last two years of undergraduate study.
