Passin' Thru is the fifth studio album by James Gang, released in October 1972, and their final album released on ABC Records (catalog no. ABCX 760). The band moved to Atco Records the next year. This album is the last James Gang recording featuring guitarist Domenic Troiano, who was replaced by Tommy Bolin .

Straight Shooter is the fourth studio album by James Gang, which was released in July 1972 on ABC Records in the US and Probe Records in the UK. This is the first James Gang album recorded after their guitarist/keyboardist/vocalist Joe Walsh left the band and went on to form the band Barnstorm.

Peters and Fox carried on with vocalist Roy Kenner and guitarist Domenic Troiano (both ex-members of the Canadian band Bush) for two albums, Straight Shooter and Passin' Thru, both released in 1972.
Passin' Thru was the second record the James Gang recorded with guitarist Dominic Troiano. His performance was very similar to that on Straight Shooter -- he wasn't a stylist, he was a workman capable of delivering sturdy hard-rock hooks.
