Professor Jason Mackenzie is a basic research scientist and an international expert on flavivirus and norovirus replication and pathogenesis. He obtained his undergraduate degree at the University of Otago, New Zealand and his PhD at the University of Queensland.
Prof Jason Mackenzie leads a research team that utilises multidisciplinary approaches to decipher how viruses establish their replicative niche in cells enabling him to construct research programs centred on intracellular virus replication.

Many viruses however are able to manipulate this cellular process for their own advantage. Here we demonstrate that Mouse Norovirus (MNV) infection induces autophagy but does not appear to utilise the autophagosomal membrane for establishment and formation of the viral replication complex.
