Recorded solely by returning band members Billy Corgan and Jimmy Chamberlin, the album was the band's first since reuniting in 2006, and was produced by Roy Thomas Baker and Terry Date, alongside Corgan and Chamberlin themselves.
According to frontman Billy Corgan, "I have a tape of us from 1993 endlessly playing the 'world is a vampire' part over and over". Corgan wrote the noted chorus "rat in a cage" on an acoustic guitar during the same session that "Landslide" was recorded.

Billy Corgan. William Patrick "Billy" Corgan, Jr. ( Elk Grove Village, Illinois, 17 de marzo de 1967) es un músico, productor, compositor, escritor, poeta, empresario y promotor de lucha libre estadounidense, líder y miembro permanente de la banda The Smashing Pumpkins, formada por Corgan y el guitarrista James Iha en Chicago, en 1987.
Early life. William Patrick Corgan Jr. was born at Columbus Hospital in the Lincoln Park neighborhood of Chicago on March 17, 1967, the oldest son of Martha Louise Maes Corgan Lutz and guitarist William Dale Corgan (1947–2021). He grew up Catholic and has a younger brother. His parents divorced in 1970. Billy said he went to live with his great-grandmother, then his grandmother.
