The Department of Cinema Studies & Moving Image Arts (CINE) aspires to integrate the critical, historical and theoretical study of cinema, media and the visual arts, with artistic and commercial practices. Our Department offers the academic degrees BA, and BA/MA in critical film studies, and BA, BFA, and MFA degrees in film and video arts.

  3. Students completing either the BA or the BFA degree in film studies are expected to acquire the ability and skills to: analyze and interpret films critically; communicate such interpretations competently in essay form; and make a short creative film or video work (BA Production and BFA only).

  4. Advanced exploration of creative cinema production through short production and post-production projects. Course focuses on the tactics and strategies of independent cinema production leading to the completion of a BFA thesis project exploring either documentary, experimental, or narrative genres.

  5. MFA in FILM. Study and create smart innovative films and moving image works in an arts practices program at a research university. Explore the full range of media materials and processes, integrating studio practice with history and theory.

  6. A BA in Cinema Studies prepares students for a wide range of career possibilities following graduation. Many CU Boulder Cinema Studies BA graduates have gone on to careers in the film industry as writers, producers, and developers, in production and post-production, or in film archives.

  7. In addition to acquiring the skills to make creative films and video works, students completing the BFA will also advance their ability to analyze and interpret films critically, and to communicate and express themselves about film competently in written form.
