By day, you might never suspect that this beacon could ever have a darker side. Yet countless tales of haunted spirits and paranormal activity suggest otherwise.
The most well-known ghost stories around Cape Hatteras Lighthouse come from the lethal seas nearby. As the name suggests, the Graveyard of the Atlantic has been host to thousands of shipwrecks – their eerie specters floating near the lighthouse.

The tower has stood watch over the treacherous Cape Hatteras for over 150 years, and in that time, it has accrued its share of ghost stories.
One of the most famous ghosts of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is the ghost of William Dudley. Dudley was a lighthouse keeper who died in 1873 after falling down the lighthouse stairs. Visitors to the lighthouse have reported seeing Dudley's ghost walking up and down the stairs, and they have even heard him speaking.
The Cape Hatteras light marked very dangerous shoals that extend from the cape for a distance of 10 nautical miles (19 km). The original tower was built of dark sandstone and retained its natural color.
