Xylophone virtuoso Ian Finkel died on November 16, 2020 at age 72 as a result of COVID-19. Ian (pronounced “eye-an”) Lawrence Finkel was born in 1948 into a show business family. His father, Fyvush Finkel, was a prominent actor in Yiddish theater and portrayed the cantankerous lawyer on the 1990s TV series Picket Fences.

Finkel, who adamantly proclaimed himself “the world’s greatest xylophonist,” and entertained from the borscht belt to the Philharmonic, playing the unconventional instrument with vaudevillian flair, died on Nov. 16, 2020, in a hospital in Manhattan. He was 72.
