Peter Maher (born 16 March 1869, in Gunnode, Tuam, County Galway, Ireland – 22 July 1940 in Baltimore, Maryland) was an Irish boxer known for his powerful punch. Early in his career Maher won the 1888 Middleweight Championship of Ireland, and the 1890 Heavyweight Championship of Ireland.
Maher hit Sharkey at the bell ending the seventh round. Sharkey was like a wild bull, he had clinched and several seconds after the bell hit Maher with three right hand blows to the head. Maher landed one in return, there was a wild scene with Sharkey hitting one of Maher's seconds in the head.
Peter Maher’s 5th round August 1888 knockout of Belfast’s John Sheenan in Dublin propelled him as Ireland’s middleweight champion. Maher’s government leader was Queen Victoria – who as of 1891 – held the English royal throne-ship 44 years.
