He was California’s state treasurer from 1915 to 1923, and was president of the California Press Association for 39 years. On November 7, 1922, Richardson was elected governor, and on January 9, 1923, he was sworn into office.
Friend Richardson was born in Friends Colony, Michigan, on 1st December, 1865. He worked as a county clerk, law librarian and newspaper editor before becoming Superintendent of the State Printing Office in California. In this post he cut the costs of publishing state schoolbooks by a third.
Richardson’s reputation as a journalist is founded on more than the zeal with which he attacked vices. His newspaper career began with the San Bernardino-Times Index in 1896, and he became the newspaper’s proprietor only a year later.
Friend William Richardson (1 December 1865-6 September 1943) was the Republican Governor of California from 9 January 1923 to 4 January 1927, succeeding William Stephens and preceding C.C. Young.
