On 13 May 1945 Kapitän zur See Wolfgang Lüth was shot by a sentry at the Marineschule when he failed to identify himself or give the password. The unlucky shot, fired by the sentry at a target he could not even see in the darkness, struck Lüth in the head, killing him instantly.

Wolfgang Lüth (* 15. Oktober 1913 in Riga; † 14. Mai 1945 [1] in Flensburg) war ein deutscher Marineoffizier, zuletzt Kapitän zur See. Er war U-Boot - Kommandant der Kriegsmarine im Zweiten Weltkrieg.
Wolfgang Lüth ( 15 de octubre de 1913 - 13 de mayo de 1945) fue el segundo mejor submarinista alemán en la Segunda Guerra Mundial . También fue el oficial naval alemán más joven en ser ascendido a capitán y el más joven en comandar la Academia Naval de Mürvik.
The following is a lecture by Lt. Commander Wolfgang Lueth on the problems of leadership in a submarine, given at a convention of naval officers at Weimar on 17 December 1943. Lueth was one of the outstanding German submarine commanders. He was born in 1913, and joined the German Navy in 1933.
