Born at Hillbrook Trull, Somerset, England, the son of Gerard and Florence Roope. During the second World War, he attained the rank of Lieutenant-Commander in the service of the Royal Navy, in July 1938 he was appointed command of a 'G' class destroyer, HMS Glowworm.
