1990s. After her big break with Sex, Lies, and Videotape, MacDowell went to star in the romantic comedy film Green Card directed by Peter Weir. The screenplay focuses on an American woman who enters into a marriage of convenience with a Frenchman so he can obtain a green card and remain in the United States.
MacDowell received critical acclaim for her role in the 1989 independent drama Sex, Lies, and Videotape from Steven Soderbergh, for which she won Independent Spirit Award for Best Female Lead and was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Motion Picture Drama.
