Nielsen's performance in Airplane! marked his turning point, which made him "the Olivier of spoofs" according to film critic Roger Ebert, and leading to further success in the genre with The Naked Gun film series, based on the earlier short-lived television series Police Squad!, in which he also starred.
Dr. Rumack is a pilot and a doctor who tries to save the passengers of a plane with food poisoning. He delivers hilarious lines such as "I am serious... and don't call me Shirley" and "some time when the crew is up against it, and the breaks are beating the boys, tell them to get out there and give it all they got and win one for the Zipper".
