Within certain limits, the force required to stretch an elastic object such as a metal spring is directly proportional to the extension of the spring.
Mathematically, Hooke’s Law can be written as \(\mathrm{F=-kx}\). Many materials obey this law as long as the load does not exceed the material’s elastic limit. The rate or spring constant, k, relates the force to the extension in SI units: N/m or kg/s2.
