Character Analysis. Wicked Stepmother? Miss Amy is Joel's father's new wife, his stepmother. Though she doesn't really seem to have that much of a relationship with Mr. Sansom after all. Her primary relationship isn't with her husband, but rather with her cousin, Randolph.
A mistress (Anna Thompson) and a servant (Lothaire Bluteau) keep a teen (David Speck) from outside contact and his ailing, estranged father during a visit to his decaying plantation.
Joel Samson, a young boy of 13, is summoned to a sprawling and decaying plantation house in the deep south to meet the father he has not seen in nine years. On his arrival, he meets Amy, the mistress of the house, and Randolph, her debauched and eccentric cousin. His father is nowhere in sight.
