Para comprender mejor esta explicación, sería útil que estuvieras familiarizado con los pronombres personales (personal pronouns). My. «My» es el posesivo del pronombre «I» (yo) y se traduce al español como Mi o Mis: My cousin is famous.
There are two types: possessive pronouns and possessive determiners. We use possessive determiners before a noun. We use possessive pronouns in place of a noun: Is that [determiner] your scarf? It’s very similar to [pronoun] mine. (It’s very similar to my scarf.) That’s not [determiner] their house. [pronoun] Theirs has got a red front door.

In English, the possessive pronouns are: mine, yours, his, hers, ours and theirs. I have a bag - this is mine. You have a cat - that cat is yours. He has a car - it is his. She has a book - it is hers. We have a flat - it is ours. They have a daughter - she is theirs.
